Based in the city of Bacau in north-eastern Romania, E.ON Moldova supplies around four billion kilowatt hours of electricity to some 1.3 million customers each year. E.ON Energie’s acquisition in 2005 of a 51 percent controlling interest in E.ON Moldova’s predecessor, which commands a market share of eleven percent, marked the company’s successful entry into the Romanian energy sector. In 2004, E.ON’s new subsidiary generated sales of around 241 million euros. The Romanian electricity business is expanding rapidly, not least thanks to the quicker-than-expected market liberalization of this EU accession candidate. Romanian non-residential customers, for instance, have been free to select their electricity supplier since 1 July, 2005.
